All four major US carriers now have very limited 5g networks available in only a few cities. Only select phones which are mostly high end phones are available to take advantage of these speeds. What many don’t know is these phones won’t support future nationwide 5g networks. AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile are all using technologies that only travel about 600 feet from a cell site, which means there isn’t much coverage and is more like a 5g test drive then the final product. The companies are using very limited resources, but are waiting for upgrades to their base stations that will improve coverage, speed, and reliability. Around the end of this year or the beginning of 2020. 5G will deliver multi-Gbps peak rates, ultra-low latency, massive capacity, and more. 5g is aimed to support a vast variety of devices and services which is going to tremendously improve efficiency throughout the spectrum. Just like when 4g was first implemented in 2010 I expect 5g to take some time to hit a stride. I expect 5g to start finding its groove around 2021.

Evolution of mobile networks

  • 1G- Analog voice was introduced
  • 2G- Digital voice was introduced
  • 3G- Mobile Data was introduced from 200kbps to a few megabits per second
  • 4G- Mobile internet was optimized for mobile from hundreds of megabits up to a few megabits per second

Differences between 4G and 5G

  • 5G is faster than 4g
  • 5G responds faster due to having lower latency over 4G
  • 5G uses spectrum better than 4G due to it’s updated coding
  • 5G has more capacity over 4G which should help lower home internet prices

5G is expected to peak up to 20 Gbps as to 4G’s 2 Gbps peak which will be 10 to 100 times faster than today’s 4G cellular data. Speeds aren’t everything that needs to be taken In consideration when comparing the two. it will be more responsive than ever due to much lower latency. This will help with keeping your blazing fast speeds from dropping off when you are traveling around town. With the 5g upgrade, it’s going to greatly help with the progression of robots, cars, health devices, retail and nearly every industry you can think of. 5G can link street lights and other devices that haven’t been connected to the internet before, with sensors constantly talking to each other. This is just the beginning of what I’m sure will change the world as we know it. Here is a list of current 5G phones. What a time to be alive!
